Acne is something no one of any age wants to deal with. It sucks as a teenager and we all looked forward to our adult years when it stops popping up EVERYWHERE all the time. Some of us didn’t get that lucky and still struggle with it into our late 20s and beyond.
Dealing with acne as a teen was rough, I had cystic acne that was painful and embarrassing but never bad enough to justify dangerous medication recommended by dermatologists. My mom helped me get it under control for the most part with the use of tea tree oil and a good skin care schedule.
As a naive teenager, I assumed that once I was an adult I would have flawless skin and never breakout like I use to. That never happened, It did become less cystic and less painful but I still was breaking out. I tried so many of the expensive acne skin lines that left my skin dry, itchy and still breaking out in pimples like a 16-year-old the morning of a big event.
One day I threw away every single bottle of acne wash, spot treatment, toner, and everything harsh. I felt liberated and terrified at the same time. I was ready to try oil cleansing, which worked really well until the castor oil started encouraging hair growth…on my face. No thank you! However, I did learn an important lesson about my skin. I was breaking out in part due to dryness and the washes I was using. My skin was begging for moisture and tender care.
I started experimenting with gentle face washes, ones without harsh chemicals, dyes, fragrances and were not specifically for acne. I skipped the toner and prioritized exfoliation. Even though I still break out here and there but its usually small whiteheads or a random zit that I can cover now.
What I use
Neutrogena Naturals Line cleanses without removing natural moisture or irritating skin. This is by far my favorite!
Simple has a wonderful light lotion that got rid of my dryness without leaving an oily look or feel!
This is my favorite! Its worth every penny and the bottle lasts a long time! I use it nightly but when I’m running low I’ll alternate every other night between the oil and a lotion
My second choice is (when money is tight), again from Neutrogena Naturals. This doesn’t only moisturize it also nourishes the skin as you sleep.
One of my friends bought these for me after my Clarisonic died and I didn’t want to dish out the cash for a new one. These feel wonderful and since they are silicone they are easy to clean! Exfoliation is important to take the old skin cells off and help clear the pores. I use these almost every day.
I first tried Micellar Water on a whim because I had a good coupon and was out of makeup remover. I never expected it to come a part of my daily routine. It not only removes makeup but is gentle enough as a cleanser! I usually use this at night but when I have an early day I’ll use in the morning or after the gym. Garnier has three different bottles for various skin types.
Tea tree oil is the only thing I use for spot treatment these days. It’s also an amazing antiseptic that I use for a million things. I’ve kept this on hand since as long as I can remember thanks to my mother.
What Else I did
Apart from changing my skincare routine, I also make sure that I wash all our bedding and couch pillows once a week, drink plenty of water, and try to eat healthy the majority of the time. While taking care of the outside of the body is important, taking care of the inside is just as important.
Learn your skin type! Dry, oily, sensitive, and combination all need different things, Something for oily skin would ruin my face while something for dry skin would be a nightmare for someone with oily skin.
- Avoid harsh chemicals and scents
- Set a routine and follow it for a few weeks before giving up on it. It can take time for your skin to balance out and adjust
- If you wash your face in the shower, make it last thing you wash
- Keep your hair off your face as much as possible
- Always remove your makeup before bed or sooner
- Try to keep your hands off
- Do not pick or poke at problem areas
Remeber that acne does not make you ugly or unattractive!
Confidence overpowers all!
